This paper presents a new approach for determination of the threshold settings of protective relays in power systems. This approach uses data-mining technology to extract the optimal relay settings information from a large data set of system parameters. This data is constructed from off-line simulation analyses. The mining of this data defines the threshold settings of protective relays. The approach is applied for threshold settings of islanding relays where accurate settings are required in order to secure the detection of islanding operations under various operating conditions and different network topologies. A case study is tested on a typical DG with multiple distributed resources and the results indicate that this approach can be used effectively for protective relays settings.
