Active and Real-time Data Warehousing: Issues and Practices

The advent of information technology has squeezed together our business time to increasingly real-time. Businesses must operate in real-time to stay competitive. Traditional data warehouses have been passive repositories of historical data to support strategic business decisions. Now a days most of the businesses needs up to dated information to support strategic as well as tactical decisions. The move to active and realtime data warehousing is ongoing and evolutionary to support today's business needs. The era of Internet and the dawn of E-business are also encouraging this shift. The literature motivates the need for and research issues arising from active and real-time data warehousing. A literature review provides the meaningful context to our paper, within the universe of existing research that has been previously conducted. In this paper, we critically review the literature; explore the topics of near real-time data integration, active analysis mechanism and limitations of existing approaches. The literature reveals overall picture of active and real-time data warehouses. This work is significant in a sense that it provides an overview of existing methods and technologies for active and real-time data warehousing practices and highlights possible future trend.
