A Study of Chinese seafarers' Mental Condition and Factors

By SCL-90,SSRS and DPOMS, the mental condition of 235 randomly selected Chinese seafarers is studied. The result shows: (1) The sums of Chinese seafarers' SCL-90 and factors are higher than that of the national average with the main mental problems lying in forced symptom, interpersonal relationship, depression and paranoid, among them about 8.9% has reached a relatively serious degree. (2)The age, job and position of the Chinese seafarers play an obvious role only to few factors of the SCL-90. (3) The Chinese seafarers" society support factors appear quite opposite to most of the SCL-90 factors, with the subjective support grade obviously higher than the objective support grade. (4) The negative emotion factors of the Chinese seafarers appear quite related to the SCL-90 factors, while the active factors and SCL-90's forced symptom, depression, hostility etc. appear quite opposite to the SCL-90 factors. (5) A better accuracy can be achieved by using the standard regression equation which consists of rage, fatigue and chaos.
