Experimental studies were conducted in clear water conditions to investigate thernfunctioning of a sack gabion as a scour countermeasure at bridge piers. For differentrnsizes of fill material of the sack gabion no difference was observed in the initialrnmovement of the gabion. Significant factors on the dislodging of the sack gabions arernapproach flow depth and velocity, pier width, and thickness and length of sackrngabion. It is observeded that stability is increased in collective body of riprap stonesrnthan placement of individual riprap stone. The experimental results were used tornderive formulas sizing gabions for scour protection at bridge piers.
