To provide high resolution, real-time, in-situ measurements of petroleum hydrocarbon bioremediation, we have been exploring techniques for use with the Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) site screening system. The SCAPS sysem uses a laser-induced fluroescence (LIF) probe coupled with a cone penetrometer truck to make in-situ, subsurface measurements of petroleum, oils and lubricants (POLs). ScAPS monitoring of bioremediation is a new application, and is based on the premise that the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) within the POL changes over time as organisms preferentially degrade the lighter PAHs, resulting in a shift of the fluorescence emission spectrum to longer wavelengths.
