Summary form only given. The authors have invoked an optical picture for the scattering process and the Born approximation to the scattering integral to identify, estimate, and correct for double scattering in microwave images. For simplicity, the model uses a scalar picture for the scattering activity. The formulas are based on the assumption that the target's scattering centers are essentially isotropic in character and largely independent of the illumination conditions, i.e., incidence angles and polarization states. It is also assumed that the double-scattering amplitudes are weaker than the single-scattering ones, but still strong enough to affect the microwave image. The double-scattering model has been applied to analytical problems, numerical simulations, and laboratory measurements.
