Investigation on Public Image of the City Environment—Taking Xi'an City as an Example

In Xi'an, as the representative of historical city in Asia, how to deal with the conservation and development, how to bring about the sustainable development and how to combine inheritance with innovation is one of the researching focuses in the city construction of Xi'an over a long period of time. Directing against this, the author in this paper, investigates the common city image of Xi'an residents. By the means of investigation on the city's structure, feature of identity and factor of identity, we can appraise city environment objectively and give some advice. Also by that means we can know the activity range for some people, and we can establish a city environment, which is legible. Design for city environment should be based on humanism, so by studying on cognitive maps, we can know people's appraise and reflection on city environment. Through data analysis, the authors discuss the main problems emerging in process of urban construction from the angle of environmental user, and finally puts forward the appropriate suggestion for this problem. These data are of great value in the construction of cities for the unique angle. Design for city environment should be based on humanism, so by study on cognitive maps, we can know people's appraise and reflection on city environment. From analyzing the factors, which influence the city environment, we can know people's needs, and give valuable advice on Xi'an city environment.
