Central Solenoid Model Coil Outer Module: Design and Fabrication

A 13 T, 640 MJ superconducting pulsed coil was designed and is mow under fabrication. The outer module of this coil has inner and outer diameters of 2.73 m and 3.60 m, rspectively and a height of 2.80 m. This module is composed of 8 layers and employs a 46 kA cable-in-condueit conductor. As the conductor is quite rigid with a thick conduit made of Incoloy 908, new technology was developed to wind the coil with high accuracy. Activation heat treatment was one of the critical issues, due to its high sensitivity to oxygen, resulting the crack of the conduit when heated up to 927 K. Therefore, a careful heat treatment system and procedure was developed and its validity was demonstrated by the successful heat treatment of the 4 layers that have already been done.
