For the diurnal load leveling of the electric power utility, a hoop energy storage system which has the capacity of 600 MJ energy storage and 70 kW power conversion has been designed. This report describes the performance tests of each component and characteristics of the rotation system for the control of its propulsion and magnetic levitation. The synchronous machine for high power and high efficiency energy conversion was investigated. The NdFeB magnet arrangement with the restoring force configuration for making equilibrium position was designed by three-dimensional code simulations. Present status of HESS is under construction of 6m diam hoop, and the full test will begin January 1998.
