The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations estimates that one third of all food producedfor human consumption is either lost or wasted, which increases emissions from landfills. By improving theefficiency and reliability of refrigeration technology, the cold chain can be significantly strengthened, minimizingwastage of perishable products and boosting food security globally.In fact, strengthening the cold chain can positively impact every single one of the United Nations’ 17 SustainableDevelopment Goals (SDGs). This is why investing in future-proof, climate-friendly, HFC-free refrigerationtechnologies should be a key priority for governments, industries, and all end users within the cold chain. Thispaper shows how natural refrigerants have been used in commercial and industrial installations around the worldto provide cold chain security. These systems can improve energy efficiency, minimize the impact of harmfulrefrigerants on the environment, provide system reliability, and avoid food wastage.
