The Variable Speed Synchronous Generator (VSSG) is a paradigm shift for electrical power generation systems. Typical applications include wind, hydro, electric vehicles and portable generators. The VSSG is a generator that can efficiently produce power at a constant 50 or 60 Hz regardless of prime mover speed. This system incorporates entirely new methods of voltage, frequency, torque and power factor control with instant synchronization. The revolutionary design makes the VSSG a potential breakthrough technology for manufacturers in the wind power and diesel industries. The VSSG is a disruptive innovation in the market place for power generation efficiency that will enable power generation operators to: Reduce the cost of wind power generation compared to DFIG and PMG. Eliminate the gear box for wind power generation (at any speed) while maintaining synchronous power output, without requiring an additional converter. Make wind power synchronous to engine backup power and therefore remove the unpredictability of wind power generation. Increase engine capacity by operating at higher than synchronous speed. Reduce fuel consumption by running an engine at a slower than synchronized speed while maintaining 50 or 60 Hz output for standby and part load. Potentially reduce the cost of green power generation by as much as 50%. This article explains the principle of operation of the Variable Speed Synchronous Generator, the various options for use of the VSSG in green and grey power generation processes and the potential cost benefits that can be achieved using the VSSG instead of traditional power train combinations consisting of power drivers, gearboxes and generators.
