Flipped Learning and Unplugged Activities for Data Structure and Algorithm Class

In this research, new blended teaching method was suggested for algorithm learning since students have difficulties to understand algorithms and to make program in programming languages. Programming from the scratch has been very common teaching method but it has requires too much efforts to learn the syntax which is not the essential subject in perspectives of computational thinking. Video lecture about explaining the algorithm in code and running example is provided for pre-class activities of flipped learning. So, students can understand the basic concepts by code and running examples. Unplugged activities are designed to evaluate how much the students studied in pre-class and identify the part which students cannot understands. For post-class, just homework for identifying the application of algorithm in real life is issued. I evaluate the effectiveness for 2 groups: experimental group with suggested method and other group with just flipped learning and compare the outcomes with test of computational thinking assessment. As the result, experimental group showed higher outcomes and improvement of self-efficacy is little higher.
