N-3 The 17~(th) Japan Society of Civil Engineering Study Tour: Environmental Problems in Beijing and Xi'an

摘要

The 17~(th) Japan Society of Civil Engineering Study Tour visited Beijing and Xi'an, China, from March 3 to 11.The purpose of this tour was to improve our understanding of environmental problems in other countries. In China, environmental problems such as water and air pollution are getting worse because of urbanization. In Beijing, we visited the Qinghei wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). This plant has two parts. In the first part, A_2O is used to treat the waste water. In the second part, water is reclaimed using a biofilter and ultrafiltration membrane. Some of the reclaimed water is used for irrigation and the rest is discharged into a river. In Xi'an, we visited the Xi'an No. 5 WWTP. This plant also uses an A_2O system and the final effluent is discharged into a river. Sludge is also treated there. On this tour, we observed that air pollution is a current challenge in China, while the sludge treatment problem has been improving.
