Ships are complex systems of systems that operate in different physical, economic and political environments forming local and global transportation systems. The transport-, fleet-, ship- and sub-level systems are all designed, manufactured, operated and maintained by a multidisciplinary group of highly specialised experts. This complexity together with global market changes, distributed suppliers, increasing level of specialisation and 5-year duration of engineering education, sets a challenge to maritime education. This challenge has been turned to opportunity in Finland by collaborative university network with national and international dimensions. The established university, with physical and virtual presence, collects all regionally distributed and best available education under one umbrella. The classical naval architecture education in format of major Master of Science track is complemented by a minor study track. This minor is intended to bring experts from other fields of engineering, business and design to the maritime field. This collaborative education is problem-based and designed to support individual, distance and experimental learning. The results demonstrate that the created multidisciplinary learning ecosystem is truly an opportunity to modernise education while simultaneously increasing the effectiveness of learning.
