A simple piezoelectric motor driven by traveling guided waves on a circular cylindrical wedge is presented in this paper. The stator is constructed by attaching a metal circular cylindrical wedge to a piezoelectric tube. An inter-digital transducer painted on the outer surface of the piezoelectric tube is used to generate flexural waves propagating along the apex of the wedge. This piezomotor is driven at a frequency of about 68 kHz. The rotary velocity and direction are precisely controllable by altering the driving voltage and phase difference on the inter-digital transducer. A dynamic response measurement and a performance test of this piezomotor are carried out experimentally. Both analytical and measured results indicate that employment of a concave rotor can optimize the performance of this motor. It is shown that this simple piezomotor features several advantages, including a simple structure, low cost, and a flexible design for various applications, among other.
