The application of conventional microwave absorbers is always limited by thickness, weight or narrow absorption bandwidth, especially in ultra-high frequency (UHF) band. To solve this problem, an ultra-wideband active metamaterial (MM) absorber for UHF band is presented. Meanwhile, PIN diodes with bias circuits are introduced into the unit-cell based on an orthogonal double-sided design obtaining a polarization-insensitive performance. The proposed absorber covers an ultra-wideband absorption of 0.76-4.57 GHz below -10 dB (143.0% in relative bandwidth) by adjusting the resistance of PIN diodes. Besides, the total thickness of the absorber is just λL/16 at the lowest operating frequency.
