Protecting a National Treasure: Rehabilitation of East Fort Ave. Water Main Fort McHenry, MD

A 20-ft water main that was serving as the primary water source to supply Fort McHenry was putout of service due to a 650-ft section of steel pipe that was located under a bridge, running over aCSX rail yard. The leaking main was causing washouts under the tracks and disrupting service.The decision was made to shut down the line and use a smaller alternate source of potable water.With the heavy commercial traffic over the bridge and normal expansion and contraction on abridge in New England Temperatures’ there was a reluctance to use CIPP or any other ridgedsolution. The contractor was recently certified to install a unique form of a flexible Kevlar? linerComposite system and advised the client this was their best option. The pipe owner agreed. Servicewas re-established in two days and put back in operation a week later protecting Fort McHenry.
