Internet of Things for Environmental Monitoring Based on Radio Over Fiber

Radio over Fiber (RoF) is one of the main technologies for the next-generation access networks due to its immunity to electromagnetic interference, low latency, low power consumption and high transmission capacity. RoF enables the processing of several radio frequency (RF) signals in a centralized location, reducing both capital expenditures (CAPEX) and operating expenditures (OPEX). This paper describes a testbed of Internet-of-Things (IoT) for environmental monitoring based on RoF that is under development in the framework of the H2020 FUTEBOL project. Moreover, we assess the impact of RoF on network performance by using a new methodology oriented to real environments.
