This paper is focused on the implementation of an open framework for Smart Ship applications development & deployment based on Hybrid Cloud architecture, & the IoT Fog paradigm. Our approach, contrary to the current concept that involves collection of on-ship sensor data & their transition for processing and consolidation in shore-based clouds, focuses on creating an onboard private cloud & moving the processing closer to the data generation sources. As a result, we create an entity that can operate autonomously, with facilities to capture, store, process & serve, ship, cargo and other sensor data, to local and remote actors via suitable communication networks. Additionally the ship may consume data services from third parties to augment its operations on an autonomous basis. We conclude by highlighting some practical issues regarding onboard accommodation of the sorts of computer and communications facilities we describe, and point to useful emerging industry frameworks & guidelines.
