Working with natural processes is paramount in the design of successful schemes. Inside the scheme the successful creation of intertidal habitats hinges on the creation of appropriate physical conditions. Outside the scheme key hydrodynamic considerations include impacts on tidal prism, water and flows. However, it is inevitable that some changes will occur and exit channels commonly form across the fronting intertidal. Far field impacts are also possible, usually downstream of the MR site in an estuary. This paper outlines the key hydrodynamic and geomorphological challenges encountered when reconstructing intertidal habitats. It draws on practical experience gained in the design, implementation and monitoring of a number of restoration schemes in the UK.
