In this paper we use a newly-developed process-based storm-impact model for gravel coasts, XBeach-G, to investigate the resilience of gravel barriers to storms. Model results show that the incident wave energy flux, wave run-up levels relative to the barrier crest height, crest width and sediment grain size are dominant factors in the response of gravel barriers to storms. These dependencies suggest that barrier crest level change cannot be predicted by parameterization of the freeboard alone. Groundwater processes are shown to be particularly important for coarse gravel barriers under high hydrodynamic loads.
