New Caledonia is a hotspot of biodiversity facing a double challenge, to go with a sustained economic development and to maintain/restore remarkable environments. Use of fresh or stored topsoil containing seeds appears to be the cheapest way to revegetate degraded mining sites, which is still badly organized. Seed storage before its use for hydroseeding is also not well controlled. In order to optimize these practices and to understand the longevity of seeds in natural environment in relation to their structures and dormancies, we conducted several experiments on in situ and ex-situ seed storage.
