Geotechnical professionals (geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists) should have skills that enable them to deliver designs of groundworks using information from ground investigations and client requirements, often in collaboration with structural engineers and other construction professionals. To do so they need core skills that can be assessed in terms of the tasks that they can do competently. This paper presents the author’s perspective on the core skills required of geotechnical professionals and indicates at what stage of their education and training these skills should be acquired.
