broken rock zone is the main reason for the convergence of surrounding rock deformation, and its thickness not only is a reflection of many factors which influence the stability of surrounding rock, but also is the results of the interaction of many factors, a comprehensive classification index. Roadway support design based on classification result of broken rock zone, has a solid theoretical foundation, and the field application effect is remarkable. How to correctly choose rational support form, parameters and reasonable construction technology is a long outstanding issues, and the final solution depends on the correct reasonable roadway support theory put forward. In terms of the definition of Roadway support theory, it should include supporting object, and the classification method of surrounding rock which is to illustrate the supporting object. The traditional roadway support theory takes the weight of the broken rock of roof and two sides as support external load. Modern elastic theory which research supporting object is under the ideal assumption, and today it also has problems. International current popular new Austrian method also is a kind of method, and it didn't answer the question of what supporting object is. In the late 1970s, China university of mining and technology, institute of broken rock zone support led by professor Dong Fangting, from the study of state of surrounding rock after excavation, done a lot of field and laboratory research work, and on the basis of a few years engineering verification, put forward that bulking deformation(or the bulking force) in the process of rock failure is the supporting object, and the development broken zone in the surrounding rock is defined as the broken zone. And based on having measured broken rock zone a lot, put forward "support theory based on broken rock zone" at home and abroad, after industrial test and promotion in more than 10 mining area more than 50000 meters of roadway in the domestic coal system, indoor similar stimulated test and theoretical research, now this theory has reached the stage by theoretical method to determine coal mine roadway, chamber supporting parameters.
