Utilization of geo-thermal energy in Romania. A case study

The paper analyses the benefits and costs of a rehabilitation project aimed to substitute partially thermal energy for district heating from fossil fuels with thermal energy from geothermal sources. The project consisted in refurbishment and modernization of an existing geothermal energy plant and five thermal substations. The environment and economic benefits resulting from the implementation of the project are presented as well as some basic aspects of the economic issues associated to the project. The most important social benefit was a lower price of thermal energy paid by end users.
