Close monitoring and potentially prophylactic care is necessary for any horse that is predisposed to laminitis. Based on the proposed multifactorial causes of laminitis including metabolic, inflammatory, traumatic, and/or vascular etiopathogeneses, any equine surgical patient (1) with sepsis or systemic inflammation, (2) that is subject to excessive weight bearing, or (3) has an underlying endocrinopathy or prior history of laminitis is predisposed.
