SHINKAI 6500 Update

Manned research submersible SHINKAI 6500 was completed in Nov. 1989, and has been operated by Japan Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC). She has capability to 1472 dives around the world deep sea. In 2012, JAMSTEC completed the first major upgrade of her, which was the largest scale since a launch. In this annual overhaul, JAMSTEC has initiated the second major upgrade of her. This report will introduce some topics of SHINKAI 6500 update. The first, the inside layout of a pressure hull will be changed, because of the one-man pilot's operation test dives and science cruises for 2017. The second, SHINKAI 6500 has an underwater navigation system. This system calls "Shinkai-track".
