There has been a surge of activity in recent years focused on new methods and their validation for the production of economically and environmentally viable biofuels using microalgae. However, recent analysis indicates that technical and economic hurdles remain (as well as political obstacles) to a profitable path to algal biofuel commercialization (Rampton & Zabarenko, 2012). Continued innovation and research are required to get production of algal biofuels over the remaining technological and commercial barriers.
