The basic principle and experimental method to test infrared screening mass and extinction coefficient of smoke by thermal imaging system are elaborated. The infrared screening mass and extinction coefficient of red phosphorus smoke are tested in a smoke chamber with this method. The detailed experimental results are listed and the typical thermal images are given. The curves of temperatures in thermal images of blackbody and background varied with time during the experiment are drawn and some laws are concluded. The infrared screening mass of red phosphorus smoke is 6.488 g/m2, which indicates this smoke may effectively screen infrared but needs a stronger concentration to completely screen the thermal imaging of blackbody. The infrared mass extinction coefficient of red phosphorus smoke is 0.372 m2/g, which indicates the extinction effect of red phosphorus smoke to infrared is much smaller than to visible light.
