Explosion phenomena of porous silicon - oxidant composites were attractive for the potential application to energetic materials. Large area porous silicon - nitrate salt nano-composite were prepared for our intention to review their explosive phenomena and estimate their feasibility as potential energetic materials. Silicon single-crystal wafer was etched with electrochemical oxidation method and special etching pool in our laboratory to form the large area porous silicon (900mmx5mm). Nitrate gadolinium - ethanol solution was dripped on the surface of porous silicon and the solution penetrated into the pores. During vacuum drying nitrate gadolinium crystallized within the pores while ethanol volatilized entirely. Then the large porous silicon -nitrate salt (PSNS) nano-composite formed. Large area PSNS nano-composites were observed explosive under the stimulation of electric spark, and the corresponding photos were given. The effects of preparation parameters on the explosion of nano-composites were discussed.
