Decabrominated diphenyl ether (decaBDE) is one of polybrominated dipheny! ether (PBDE) congeners, which most widelyAsed as flame retardants in plastic, textiles and electrical appliances. Many authors point that decaBDE has longer residual life time due to its large molecular fize and low solubility in water, PBDE congeners are globally presented in the environment. We have recently reported the preliminarily results of biological toxicity for adult rat after exposure to BDE-209 Female Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats, 8 weeks old, were administrated with blank-^s(peanut oil), low-^s(120mg/kg per day), moderate-(350mg/kg per day) and high-dose (lOOOmg/kg per day) of commercial BDE-209, daily for 3 weeks. Effects on thyroid Tiormone level, liver and kidney function were studied The disturbance of thyroid hormone was evaluated by serum TT3, TT4, FT3 and FT4 levels. Liver and kidney injuries were distinguished by serum alanine amino transaminase (ALT) activity, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine (Cr) and histopathological observation The results indicate that BDE-209 can disrupt thyroid hormone balance and alter the level of ALT, BUN and Cr in SD adult rats after exposure to the high dose (>35Omg/kg per day), Cr elevation was dependent on the BDE-209 dose while BUN decrease was not. The histopathological observation shows that the liver enlargement and histological-change while kidney injury was not obvious.
