Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is a highly transmissible viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. The strict vaccination and restricted animal movement is an effective way to control this disease in enzootic countries and adoption of an 'emergency vaccination to live' policy during an outbreak of FMD in a previously FMD-free country. In this study, FMDV VP1 gene was fused to three copies of either porcine or murine C3d or four copies of a 28-aa fragment of murine C3d containing the CR2 receptor binding domain (M28) to investigate the immune enhancement of C3d gene.
