Traditional materials, used in external support structures, like timber and normal concrete has certain fundamental shortcomings. These shortcomings are highlighted in an analysis using defined material and structural properties as the basis. Foamed concrete has been identified as a support material with excellent properties allowing the designer to tailor his product and performance. This paper assesses the material properties and performance of a modular pre-cast foamed concrete support system specifically developed for deep level seismically active mining. The principles of this technology will also be discussed, opening doors to a wide range of foamed concrete pre-cast applications.
