Advances in technology combined with a shift in design and operating priorities to give greater weight to reducing environmental impact have the potential to more than offset the forecast growth in air travel. It takes a long time to take new ideas from the laboratory to the production line and on into the world fleet. Operational measures which can be applied to the current fleet should therefore be a priority. Technology which can be installed in current production aircraft and possibly retrofitted to part of the existing fleet should also be a priority. There is no higher priority than establishing a more robust understanding of the impact of aviation on the atmosphere and climate.
