Soybean protein fibre is a new type phytoprotein fibre and it was invented by Chinese researchers in 1999. In this paper we reported a study on the flame retardation of soybean protein fibre and soybean protein fibre/cotton blend with hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene. The flame retardant and thermal properties of the fibres were studied by Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI), char yield, thermal analysis and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The experimental results indicated that the treated soybean protein fibre and the blend had higher LOI and char yield values, which meant their flame retardant properties were effectively improved.
