Sisal fiber (SF) was pretreated by alkali, KH-550, and steam explosion. Sisal fiber/ phenol formaldehyde (SF/PF) composites were prepared through compression molding. The effects of the treatments on the mechanical, and thermal properties of sisal fiber were studied. The results indicate that KH-550 treatment is an ideal methods for modification of SF. KH-550 treated sisal fiber reinforced PF got 38.11 % and 9.99 % increasing on impact, and bending strength respectively than untreated SF reinforced SF/PF composite. Thermal stability of the composites improved evidently after SF being treated. Studies on fiber-matrix interface and fracture behavior of the composite were also made by scanning electron micrographs.
