The Analysis, Creation, and Teaching of Orchestration (ACTOR) Partnership brings together a varied group of experts to realize interdisciplinary research on topics surrounding musical timbre and orchestration. In support of ACTOR research activities, recording engineers/producers (Tonmeisters) offer their expertise in the recording of complex acoustic music. For the ODESSA (Orchestral Distribution Effects in Sound, Space and Acoustics) Project and complemented with concurrent acoustic research activities, the Tonmeisters realize an exploratory multitrack recording of a symphony orchestra, capturing sound components from different perspectives and mixing them with the intention of producing a convincing sonic representation of the music. The mixes as well as the disassembled components of the sound are later presented to the ACTOR researchers for evaluation, enabling them to further examine aspects of timbral blending in symphonic sound.
