Performance Assessment of Open Source Java Based CORBA ORBs: Middleware for Internet Applications

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) is an industry standard that attempts to obtain interoperability among distributed objects collaborating in Internet-based and other distributed applications. This research focuses on CORBA objects that support mappings to the Java language which is used extensively in e-commerce and other Internet applications. This paper presents a qualitative and quantitative comparison of five of the readily available CORBA implementations for the Java language, four of which are open-source implementations and one is a commercial implementation. The performance comparison is based on empirical data collected during the research. The qualitative comparison will address the capabilities and limitations of each of the five products under evaluation. The results of this research are expected to be useful to distributed application developers considering using CORBA as a middleware for Java based applications on the Internet.
