Founded in 1889, the Hongkong Electric Co., Ltd. (HEC) is responsible for the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity to Hong Kong Island and Lamma Island of Hong Kong SAR. Today, HEC's power station on Lamma Island has a total installed capacity of 3,420MW, serving more than 550,000 customers with a supply reliability rating of 99.999% since 1997. Electricity supply is mainly produced from eight coal coalfired generating units which were developed in fired three stages since 1978 with the last 350MW coal coalfired -fired unit commissioned in 1997. As a result of keeping abreast with the coal coalfired power generation technology advancement and adopting state fired stateof of the theart combustion and steam turbine technology available in market during design stage, generation -art efficienc efficiency y of the units ha has s been improved progressively progressively. . The last coalfired unit equipped with flue gas desulphurisation and low Nox burner systems has achieved a unit efficiency of 42.5%. HEC started exploring the installation of higher higherefficiency combined cycle plants in the late 1990s. Efficiency In meeting the electricity demand in the 21 st century, two of the in inservice -service 125MW gas turbines were converted in 2002 to a combined cycle unit adding an extra output of 115MW without burning additional fuel, resulting in a unit efficienc efficiency improvement fr y from 30% to 45.7%. With the adoption of “F” class gas turbine technology and steam cycle of triple pressure with reheat design, the first gasfired unit will achieve a unit efficiency of 56.5%. This paper presents various technologies adopted by HEC in power generation efficiency enhancement during plant design and equipment selection stage stages, thereby reducing both fuel consumption and s, environmental impact.
