This paper outlines the many advantages which should be considered when selecting to use surplus, ex-stock, 'second-hand', or 'grey market' equipment for power projects. In addition to assessing the overall extent and sources of such available equipment, the paper also looks closely at the technical aspects and the decision making process involved in using all or part of such equipment or plant in a new power project development. The paper also provides some guidance for project developers on how much such equipment is likely to cost and highlights the many strategic and financial advantages of using such equipment. While attempting to assess the total availability of surplus power generation and ancillary equipment, the paper also takes a historical look at the industry's changing attitude to the use of such plants, from the point of view of clients, OEM's and asset disposal managers. Various successful projects are also summarized, along with some of the problems which had to be addressed by the gas turbine operators in each specific application.
