OPERATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS AND REPAIR SOLUTION FOR THE GAS TURBINES IN KOREA

Since Korea installed it's very 1st Gas turbine power station at Yongworl site in 1967 with 10 15MW Units, 8 of those units have been retired in 1982 but 2 units of those are still operating for emergency peaking machines. Later several 300MW power stations have been established in Korea in 1977. However the major Cogeneration projects in the country have been developed since 1992 starting with eight GE's 7F units, four 7EA units, five ABB's GT11N units. In 2004, there are total about 110 units of gas turbines and 43 steam units installed for power generation and the capability in 2004 is about ll,820MW for gas units and 6,469MW for steam units on the designed based rate. Reliability and economic operation of the facilities are the important aspect in managing gas turbine power plants. Especially repair components is said to be the most critical issue to achieve the ultimate goal. Repair solution will vary according to the different model or design concepts, operation mode or condition and most importantly rapid changing technologies. KPS has developed as a world's class repair depot not only for the components but for the ratable modulars of General Electric's MS7001B, EA, F, FA, FA~+ AND FA~(+e) as well as Westing House's W-501D5, W251B12 and Alstome's GT-11N. The operational characteristics and experiences in terms of the maintenance of the gas turbine power plants in Korea is reviewed. Finally key focus will be on the effort in developing the repair shop capabilities for the gas turbines which accommodate most recent technological advances such as LPPS and advanced TBC coating, CNC Laser Welding and Machining, Vapor Diffusion Brazing and Rejuvenation Heat Treatment.
