For the planning of the new high voltage lines for the connection of distributed generation from Renewable Energy Sources (RES), information about the exploitable potential of RES is pre-required. Based on such information a decision support tool has been developed. The tool examines candidate RES projects from technical and economic point of view and produces penetration scenarios of dispersed RES generation to the transmission and distribution high voltage networks. For the estimation of the technically and economically exploitable RES potential, a sequential methodology is applied. The tool takes as inputs the physical RES potential, legislative parameters, environmental data, land uses, existing RES technologies characteristics, infrastructures, the high voltage network, the financial environment as well as RES supporting measures. To correlate the potential information, having a strong geographical character, with the electrical network, a module, named e-Zeus, has been developed, for digitizing under a GIS platform the electrical network. e-Zeus combines electrical topology information, geo-information for the planning of the high voltage electrical network and other geographical information of the area of interest. The user can apply different planning scenarios with various connection schemes and verifies the smooth system operation under different conditions. Steady state network analysis is performed for each scenario in order to examine the system's transfer capability, to verify voltage profiles and to determine any required network reinforcement needed. Planning optimization may be effected taking into account the total installation, operation and maintenance cost, implications from the penetration of RES energy to transmission and distribution networks, energy production cost and investment analysis indicators.
