THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE EUROPEAN SYNCHRONOUS SYSTEM

In the continental part of Europe, the development of cross border lines started by 1920, mainly to take advantage of the Swiss hydro power. With the crisis, the process of interconnection slowed down and it restarted after the second world war, resulting in the mid-fifties in three main systems, isolated from each other, exchanging power through 220kV radial operation. These three systems involved respectively France, Spain and Portugal on one side, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Austria on the other and Italy. Switzerland was split in three parts, each one belonging to one of these three blocks.
