This study examines concepts of applying mesophase injection and oxidation stabilization to the fabrication of carboncarbon composites for aircraft brakes. The results show that it is feasible to inject low-viscosity mesophase pitch through a non-woven rigidized perform disk to retain flow-induced microstructures, and to stabilize the disk for carbonization by oxidizing at low temperatures that do not allow the flow structures to relax. Oxidation of the mesophase matrix at 170 °C is effective in retaining the flow-induced microstructures in 70 mm diameter disks for both first- and second cyle stabilization. Carbonization yields of stabilized disks are about 85% after heat treatment to 1150 °C. The density of 1.83 g/cm3 was measured in a specimen after three cycles of injection and stabilization.
