The requirement of high resolution of LCD brings about the smaller pixel size and the lower aperture ratio. Thus, light utilization becomes lower. In this paper, microlens-array was developed to enhance the rate of light utilization in LCD. Equipped under the TFT-array substrate, the incident rays from backlight are guided by the microlens-array to propagate to the transparent area. From the optical-ray-trace simulations, significant gain in brightness can be obtained with the use of microlens-array. In addition, the image quality can be improved with lower power consumption.
