Tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline)aluminurn is one of the most useful metal chelates for organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs). By changing 5-position CH to N and adding methyl substituent on 4- or two methyl substituents on 4-and 6- position 8-hydroxyiquinoline, a series of 4-methyl-[1.5]-naphthyridin-8-ol (4Maq) and 4,6-methyl-[1,5]-naphthyridin-8-ol (46Maq) metal (Al~(3+), Ga~(3+), and In~(3+)) chelates were realized. These new metal chelates all show deep-blue fluorescence and 4Maq aluminum chelate is used as suitable wide band-gap host material for efficient dopant-based blue OLEDs is demonstrated.
