AN OVERVIEW OF THE TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT DURING 1988 SEOUL OLYMPICS AND 2002 FIFA KOREA-JAPAN WORLDCUP IN SEOUL, KOREA

The 2002 FIFA Korea-Japan Worldcup successfully concluded. Korean national soccer team surprised the world by achieving the fourth place and showed 'Korea Power' to the world. The Korean citizens also fascinated journalists and reporters around the world by their elegant cheering culture and mature/cultivated citizenship. This success of the Worldcup event should be attributed to the best play of the Korean national soccer team and enthusiastic cheering by the 'red devils' and cultivated citizens. However, on the other side, it can also be attributed to a thorough preparation and the devotion of various organizations including the Worldcup organizing committee, police officers, government officials and other staffs involved in the event. Traffic policy can vary greatly according to the circumstances of the city and the characteristics of the event. An establishment of the strategy suitable for the city' s characteristics and the corresponding traffic management policy can determine the success of the event. For hosting cities, which are preparing for a world-class event such as an Olympics or Worldcup, we wish that Seoul city's traffic management case can be used as the cornerstone for establishing an effective and efficient policy.
