Integrin-mediated adhesion to the extracellular matrix protein fibronectin (FN) triggers signals that control proliferation, gene expression and matrix mineralization in osteoblasts [1]. We have engineered model surfaces presenting well-defined chemistries that modulate FN adsorption/conformation, integrin binding and focal adhesion assembly. These changes in adhesive interactions modulate osteoblast-specific gene expression and matrix mineralization.
