A Finite Element Analysis Of Agricultural Cutting Tools

Cutting tool is an essential element in cutting operations for harvesting, crushing, or any other cutting processes of agicultural plants' residues. This type of cutting tools is generally different than the traditional cutting tools, which used in cutting and forming metallic products. Many factors are affecting the induced stresses resulted in the cutting tools due to cutting process. The much important factors are: the cutting tool geometry (cutting edge angle and tip thickness), edge configuration (straight or serrated), cut material conditions (dry or wet), and method of clamping the tool with its holders. In this work, a numerical analysis has been performed for some models of cutting tools having different edge geometry and configurations and also of different clamping methods. The stress pattern resulted in all of these models and also the deformed shapes are presented. These resulted stresses in cutting tools can be used as a measure for predicting their lifetime. Throughout the results of this analysis, optimum values for the cutting tool edge angle, tip thickness, and also the best methods of supporting have been provided to be ready available for using by the designers and manufacturers of these cutting tools.
