Modeling the Cathodic Protection Performance of Oil and Gas Pipeline in Nigeria: Case Study of an Oil Exploration and Production Firm

Cathodic protection is one of various ways of protecting structure most especially pipelines that are liable to corrode. Corrosion is a physicochemical phenomenon affected by multiple factors. The effect of these factors on corrosion depends on their concentrations and interactions with each other. A model considers interactions of different parameters with each other as well as their effect on the corrosion rate. Galvanic Anode is one type of cathodic protection and a study is done to check and model out its performance. The models were validated using data gotten from Oil Exploration and Production Firm in Nigeria and the relationships showed that the rate of corrosion is dependent on the input temperature, input pressure, CO_2 content and water salinity. Also the amount of current required to cathodically protect a pipeline is proportional to the listed conditions. It is concluded that though corrosion occur both internally and externally, the tendency for corrosion to occur is more prominent externally than internally.
